As promised, today is my turn to pick the topic for the QT Blog Chain. I've chosen to put all of you writers to the test and am throwing down the challenge to...WRITE! I want a short story. (Mine is 250 words. Feel free to write one hundred, three hundred, five hundred...whatever! words)
Yesterday's poem was a hint because it had a heart involved and that's the only stipulation I have. Somehow, someway, heart(s) must be involved. And to show that I am throwing myself under the wheels with all of you and not waiting until the very end - here's my story. I call it: The Picnic
The day she first learned that he couldn’t die was on a Tuesday.
“So wh-what are you?” she’d asked, all doe-eyed innocence - with blue eyes and soft brown curls. He was tall and indestructible. Someone you’d want to cling to in the middle of a storm. “A vampire, or something?”
“No. I’m not that.”
She waited. He took a long time to answer. “I just…am.”
Casual, indifferent. She’d known right away he wasn’t like other boys. She just didn’t know he was like this.
The day he first started tearing his heart out for her was on a Wednesday.
“Stop!” she cried. She begged and pleaded with him. “Why are you doing this to me?”
He didn’t answer, but did it again the following Wednesday. And then yet again…one more time.
She thought she was going to lose her breakfast. Almost threw it up all over the pretty red and white checked tablecloth they were sitting on underneath the sweeping branches of a gnarled old tree.
“I’ll do it for as long as you need me to,” he replied.
She sighed. Then dried her tears. The once pulsing heart had stopped its slow quivers and now lay glistening and burgundy in her palm. She was so hungry after all. It was why her stomach had been upset.
“I do wish you’d let me try another kind.” A slow, impish sort-of smile crossed her pale features. “It’s like having the same steak dinner every time.”
And she began to eat.

Wow. I love it! Great job! So does it have to have a real heart in it? Or can it be like, i dunno, the King of Hearts or something?
Either way, I'm loving this round! (Well, right now I am.) ;)
It doesn't have to have a real heart in it (I've just been having this kicking around in my head and it came out literally.) You can use anything Heart related - ex. a deck of cards, with the Heart card playing significance? Anything!
Ooooh, great story! I feel all excited about this round now, I just can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
Heart: It's what's for dinner.
(I couldn't resist.)
Loved the twist at the end! I better start working on my story; my post is coming up soon!
Crazy! Love the imagery.
This is exactly the kind of topic I needed to get me out of the rut I'm in.
Yay!
wow! awesome story! Hmmm, thought of expanding that to novel length? :D Definitely makes me nervous for my round LOL better get thinking!!
Oooooooo. Wow. Cool and creep at the same time.
NICE...deliciously creepy - - - almost wish I had more time to do this round...almost!
Interesting. I like the twist at the end.
Yay! This will be a fun blog chain to follow.
EW! That was great in a "you painted it so good now I can't get the image out of my head" way!
LOVE the topic...very original.

And protein is so healthy!
Lovely story. And a great topic!
Hey Jess. Here's my story. Might not be the best writing but it was cathartic.
In A Heartbeat
At night, I snaked my arm under his so it rested on his chest and I could feel the beat of his heart. He had a cough --- a simple cough, infrequent, not hacking --- no big deal, right? Wrong. Tests said cancer.
The consummate researcher inside me immediately ran to the computer. A doctor at a respected university wrote that he had found a possible cure for the dreaded disease. While in China, he had come across ancient documents that cited an herbal remedy for this malicious ailment. He rooted out the herb and, to his surprise; in test tubes it killed cancerous cells in hours while leaving healthy cells intact. It worked just as well with mice. I smacked down a hefty sum and ordered a bottle of the herbal capsules that night --- rush delivery.
He took them religiously but his health still declined. I was by his side every minute of every day --- talking, cheering him on… then his appetite disappeared. I cooked his favorite meals. He’d take a bit and then turn his head and gaze out the window until I took the plate away.
His arm and leg became paralyzed. I carried him everywhere he needed to go. It was hard; he was heavy. Soon, the vomiting started. First with food, then with water --- just licking an ice cube made his stomach convulse and dispel bile.
One month to the day of his diagnosis his heart beat one last time. My friend, my constant companion who had been by my side since I started my writing journey seven years ago was gone and so was a piece of my heart.
